CIC Elementary School Library

Welcome!

The CIC Elementary School Library is a cozy and comfortable place where students can explore the wonders of reading! We currently have close to 10,000 volumes as well as books on tape, videotapes and magazines. Our library is staffed by Ilana Locker.

Kinder students reading at the end of their library session.

Starting with pre-Kinder, all classes come into the library once a week for 45 minutes (pre-K comes twice a week for 30 minutes). Please check our schedule to see on what day your child has library. During their class, students learn a new library skill and/or are read a new story before they check out their books.

Opening Hours of Library

Our hours are from 7:30 to 3:30 Monday to Thursday and from 7:30 to 3:00 on Friday. Students are also welcome to use the library during their morning recess or lunch break.

Check-out Policy

  • Each student, Kinder and above, is allowed to check out two books and one magazine weekly.
  • Each student will be responsible for returning all library materials on the day of their next library class (although renewals are possible).
  • ESL students will be able to check out four books (two for ESL class and two for homeroom class).
  • Big books and books with tapes can be checked out by teachers and parents.
  • Parents can check out books for two weeks.
  • There will be a charge for any lost library item, assessed at the end of the school year or when the child leaves the school.

Library News and Upcoming Events

First Grade Rise n' Read: We held our first-ever Rise n' Read for first grade this year in April! Parents and children read to each other in the morning in the elementary library. What a way to start the day!

Kinder Rise n' Read: We held our first Rise n' Read of the year with our Kinder class. Lots of parents participated and they were rewarded, not just with the pleasure of reading to their children, but also with some home-baked goodies after the event!

The banana bread ready to be eaten!

This year, the second grade class completed a Flat Stanley project where we exchanged questions and information with schools in Romania and the Philippines. Here are the letters with photographs our students wrote to their friends in the other schools. You can also click on the link located under our navigation bar to the left.

Below are pictures from some of last year's library-related events.

Dr. Seuss' and The Cat in the Hat's Birthday Party! Last school year we celebrated with a lunchtime birthday party what would have been Dr. Seuss' 103rd birthday and the 50th anniversary of The Cat in the Hat's publication! We also asked students to come to school wearing crazy hats in honor of the ever-mischievous cat!

PreKinder students in their hats! Looks like we also have a Cat in the house!

Kinder and First graders with their hats.

Second graders were decked out in style!

Third graders had some funny things on their heads.

But the fourth graders got the prize for originality! Is that a lunchbox I see?

Fifth graders are looking good, especially with that gold hair!

The teachers also looked great!

We read The Cat in the Hat during lunch...

sang Happy Birthday...

And then had some CAKE!

Check out our Library Podcasts! Two grades have recorded podcasts during their library sessions. The fourth graders recorded the Just-so stories that they wrote in conjunction with their science unit on animals and the second graders recorded the two "Black Lagoon" stories they wrote, inspired by Mike Thaler's series.

Wednesday, December 13, our school participated in a worldwide effort to break the record for "Most People Reading Aloud Simultaneously in Multiple Locations" with a passage from Charlotte's Web. It was great fun as the elementary students, along with some middle and high school students, gathered in the gym to read one page from this classic children's book by E.B. White.

We had a lead reader and all participants had a one-page printout from the book.We started at exactly 1 pm, which is 12 pm EST.

We cheered as we finished the passage at approximately 1:02!

Wednesday, September 13, would have been Roald Dahl's 90th birthday. To celebrate, we held a Roald Dahl Day where students and teachers dressed as characters from Dahl's books or dressed in yellow, Roald Dahl's favorite color. In the afternoon, a Readers Theater of The BFG was performed and we had a revolting recipe fest with food inspired by the books! It was a super Wonkalicious day as the pictures below demonstrate!

Students listening enraptured as Mrs. Twit (aka Mrs. Metcalf) recited a Revolting Rhyme!

From our youngest to our oldest, so many people dressed up as a character or in yellow! We had Willy Wonkas, Cinderellas (from the Revolting Rhyme), Witches and the Wolf (from the Revolting Rhyme).

Little Red Riding Hoods, Willy Wonkas and the author himself!

The Twits were a popular couple!

Fourth graders came as Danny, James, George, Charlies and Sophie. Fifth graders were Violet Beauregarde, Matildas and Willy!

Witches and accompanying mouse were also present!

Little Red Riding Hood, a Witch, Miss Honey, the BFG and Matilda!

And those who didn't dress up as a character, wore yellow!

The Five Golden Ticket winners!

Readers Theater of The BFG

There were some revolting, but delicious foods to be had at the end of it all!
Snozzcumbers..

The Enormous Crocodile and Bruce Bogtrotter's Cake...

Mr. Twit's beard...

Lickable wallpaper, Stickjaws for talkative parents and Crispy wasps stings on toast!

Strawberry fudge and of course, peach juice!

But it doesn't look like the food was so revolting!

*********
We started off the school year with a great morning announcement presentation by our first grade class of a children's book classic Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin and John Archambault. What a great way to reinforce the alphabet!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, will there be enough room?
Oh nooo, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

Library Innovations

Check out our new Check-out desk! Instead of throwing away all of last year's catalogs, we've reused them to make a spectacular decoupage for our Circulation Desk! This can be used for our very own I-Spy games or even Where's Waldo? (he's in there somewhere!)

From a distance...

Up close.

The reuse of catalogs went even further when we made mouse pads, again from old publisher catalogs, as a start-of-school-year gift for all of our teachers!

The library also welcomes donations of books, videos and DVDs, in English and/or Spanish (in good condition only, please). Even a comic book or two would be appreciated!

We are here to serve our children and parent community so please don't hesitate to contact the elementary librarian, Ilana Locker, with any comments and/or suggestions!

Our CIC Elementary Library Website was named a 2003 Best of the Web winner in the K-8 small schools category by netConnect/Web Feet! This was an enormous honor as the award comes from the American Library Association, the largest professional library association in all of North America!
