CIC is an academic community which challenges and nurtures students. We strive to foster a love of learning in students, educating them to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
We offer a proven American-style, international curriculum from PreNursery to Grade 5 and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program to Grades 6-10. The IBMYP leads students into the IB Diploma Program for Grades 11 & 12, which we have been offering for about twenty years.
In addition to the core curriculum, the Elementary and Secondary Schools both offer courses in Technology, Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Physical Education and Spanish (as a native and modern languages). Secondary School students have additional language options as well. Students who are non-native English speakers and need extra assistance are served by our extremely well-qualified ESOL teachers. CIC accepts students up to Grade 8 without prior English language instruction.
CIC places students in some of the finest universities around the world through our comprehensive college preparatory program which includes the full IB program and the opportunity for AP Exams. CIC students who are fluent in Spanish are also eligible for entrance into Venezuelan universities through the Revalidas process.
Dear Parents,
CIC’s Elementary School serves students from Pre-Nursery (age
2.5) through 5th grade (age 11). We educate the whole child, not only
the academics but also help them grow and mature emotionally and socially
in a welcoming, challenging and safe environment. We strive to meet each
student’s individual needs. Student progress is closely monitored.
The curriculum mostly follows the US standards with an international
approach to the Social Studies curriculum in preparation for the International
Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (grades 6-10).
All subjects are taught in English: Mathematics, English, Science and
Social Studies. Students receive 4 periods (45-minute periods) of Spanish
a week. Other Specials include 2 periods of Music and PE, and a period
each of Art, Computer and Library. The school starts at 7:35 am and classes
end at 3:00 pm. We have an extensive after-school program which include
an array of activities and these vary every season (4 seasons in a school
year).
The Elementary School has morning assemblies on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday each week. During assemblies, new students are recognized and
welcomed, birthdays are recognized, different countries represented in
the Elementary School community are celebrated; Venezuela is also celebrated
through presentations which enlighten the beauty of this country.
Our open and friendly campus invites our community members to become
involve with the school and enjoy the facilities. We provide a warm,
caring and secure environment for our student learners and welcome parents
and families to actively participate.
Carmen Sweeting, Superintendent
The program in PreNursery, Nursery and PreKindergarten is a multi-sensory, developmentally appropriate curriculum. It is based on the child's need for freedom within limits. A carefully prepared environment guarantees exposure to a variety of materials and experience through which intellectual as well as physical and psychological abilities are developed. Along with the development of the child's social skills, we help him/her discover the wonderful world of numbers, colors and letters, using materials and programs specially designed to cover the areas of pre-reading and pre-writing.
Student progress is reported to parents at the middle and the end of each grading period. In addition, parent conferences are requested once in the fall and once in the spring. Of course, conferences may be requested by either parent or teacher as need arises.
The program for students in grades one through five is equivalent to curriculum used by high quality schools in the United States. However, as an international school, we also focus on global education and preparing students to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. Creative thinking, critical analysis, and research skills are integrated into the regular academic program. Children are encouraged to explore possibilities and develop into independent lifelong learners.
The Language Arts program is built on the premise that students best learn to read and write through extensive experiences in reading and writing. Children are exposed to the writing process beginning at grade one, literature-based reading combined with a phonics-based approach is used.
The Science and Mathematics programs focus on discovery and inquiry, giving students opportunities for "hands on" learning and problem solving by making use of experiements and manipulatives to teach abstract ideas.
The Social Studies program is designed to equip children with necesary skills to become active citizens in the global community, developing respect, understanding and acceptance of other cultures, fostering curiosity of the world as a whole, and creating an awareness of the physical world.
Specialized instruction is provide by teachers of Art, Computers, Drama, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish.
CIC Elementary students are encouraged to make meaningful comparisons from this knowledge base to other nations and people of the world, past and present.
