Colegio Internacional de Caracas is planning an extraordinary educational event. On Saturday March 29th and Sunday March 30th, 2008 we are hosting our sixteenth annual Junior Model United Nations Conference. This is an event for students in grades six through eight. JMUN appears in a similar format to that of SAMUN but JMUN has an altogether different feel. It is a high energy, friendly debating forum for younger students new to the MUN organization.
Model United Nations is a simulation of the negotiations that occur at the United Nations in New York. Students prepare to be a delegate of a country and a committee. During the conference they negotiate real and current global problems and lobby towards real solutions with their delegate peers. JMUN is a regional event and host to many of the top educational institutes in Venezuela.
This year JMUN will be even more current, vibrant, and exciting as we make new changes. One major change will be the replacement of the Disarmament commission which forms part of the peace and security branch and replacing it with the new Peace Building commission. This new commission aims at supporting peace building initiatives that directly contribute to post conflict stabilization and the prevention of recurring conflicts. The overarching goal for this commission is one of bringing long term sustained peace for post conflict countries and their residents.
Pedagogically, JMUN is an excellent curricular tool. It not only increases awareness of world issues, but it also develops such skills as public speaking, problem-solving, negotiating, investigating current political, social and economic events, understanding foreign policy, as well developing students' skills in researching and writing. JMUN is also an excellent venue to prepare students for SAMUN, or other MUN conferences. JMUN is a required academic unit in CIC's Social Studies program for the Middle School.
Each day the student news staff publishes a chronicle of the day's events. This year's JMUNDO will be published and updated live on the internet.
On Saturday March 29th and Sunday March 30th, CIC will be hosting the 16th annual Junior Model United Nations Conference. Our students will be collaborating and working with students from 8 other Venezuelan schools. Where they will undertake a two day simulation based around the real world activities of a United Nations body, usually the Security Council or the General Assembly and its committees.
Participants assume the roles of representatives of Member States (or Official Observers) and consider items from the UN system's vast agenda. This year we are proud and honored to be receiving our JMUN Key Note speech from Mr. Enrique Valles, Head of field office, San Cristobal for the UNHCR, United Nations High Commission For Refugees. The UNHCR was established in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide.
JMUN delegates have been working for many weeks on understanding some of the worlds most current, pressing issues, such as supporting women in the receiving of small loans (micro-credit loans) aiming at supporting the local economic development in developing countries, the elimination of the production and removal of landmines, supporting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) in maintaining peace and democracy, The question of civilian kidnappings, The question of overpopulation and the consequences on the natural environment and The question with respect to extending UN military involvement in Afghanistan, among many others. We look forward to a successful conference filled with debate, solutions and co-operation.
